My godmother lived with early onset Alzheimers diagnosed at the age of 69. She passed before the age of 75. In my adolescence I spent countless hours and days at the nursing home, observing the lonely and lost souls of residents, many of whom had late stage Alzheimers. I witnessed horrifying incidences with outdated restraint techniques and a total lack of humane care in some instances. Dementia and Alzheimers present a horrible final chapter of life.
My godmother's daughter developed a rare form of Parkinsons with the same genetic link, and passed at the age of 63. Her grandmother had passed with the same genetic link.
In addition to known genetic links, there are many environmental, lifestyle, and external factors that lead to dementia and associated diseases.
in 2020, an estimated 564,000 Canadians were living with dementia. By 2031, that number is projected to climb to 937,000 Canadians living with dementia without intervention.
By making a donation, you are helping to make a difference the critical work Baycrest is leading in dementia research, innovation, care and education globally.
In gratitude.
