Most of the people on my team have had their lives impacted by Alzheimer or other dementia's whether it be family, friends or loved ones. My Oma (Dutch for grandmother) was diagnosed with dementia before her passing. My Aunt's mother passed from Alzheimer's. A few of my friends have/had relatives living with Alzheimer's or other dementia's. For this reason, me and my hockey team have decided to enter a team into the MCOCI Pro Am for Alzheimer's hockey tournament taking place May 1 - 3/2025 in the GTA. All proceeds will support Baycrest, a global leader in healthcare, research, innovation and education.
According to the World Health organization, 47.5 million people live with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease worldwide. In Canada alone, over 402,000 (65 years and older) are living with dementia which is 7.1%. There are 76000 new cases diagnosed annually. This is a 14.3 new cases per 1000 in the senior population.
