As another year begins, I’m once again committing to something that challenges my legs, strengthens my heart, and means more to me than ever before. This spring, I’ll be riding in the Mattamy Homes Bike for Brain Health on May 31, 2026, and I’d love for you to join me in making an impact.
While I would never have guessed that brain health would become so important to me, I have seen it touch the lives of my family, loved ones, and close friends. It’s a topic that weighs more heavily on me as I age, and as I hear about the challenges many face in this area.
My mom, Carolyn Pickles, was diagnosed with dementia in 2019 and passed away in 2024 after several difficult years of decline.
At the same time, this cause has taken on another layer of meaning in our family. My son Liam recently graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, where he was actively involved in cognitive research and brain-computer interface advancement. He is now preparing for his medical entrance exams and hopes to pursue Neurology or Neurosurgery. Watching his passion for brain science grow while experiencing firsthand the realities of neurological disease has made this ride especially powerful for both of us.
Over the past three years participating in this event, Liam and I have increased our participating distance (from 25 to 50, to 75 km). We have ridden through the sun, the cold, and the downpour. Each year is more memorable than the last.
This year, I am shifting my focus to not only riding the route, but also inviting you to come along and ride with us. In addition to supporting an important cause, it’s a great way to become healthier, more active and be part of a strong community.
If you have a bike, there’s still time to register and ride! We can organize group rides in advance for those who need practice. And if cycling isn’t your thing, you can always come out to cheer us on—or, if you’re able, contribute to this meaningful cause.
