I’m riding in honour of my dad, John Hawkins, who passed away at age 65 from a dementia‑related illness after being diagnosed at just 56. Dementia is a cruel disease, slowly taking pieces of the person you love and leaving families holding tightly to memories.
My dad loved the outdoors and cycling through the Toronto ravines—a passion that lives on through my sister, who has fully embraced the role of lead cyclist, with me happily tagging along, enjoying the scenery, and trying not to get dropped. This ride is for him, for the memories that endure, and for the importance of brain health and research, so fewer families have to experience this loss.
More than 770,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia — a number projected to soar to nearly one million by 2030 as Canada’s population ages and demographics shift, without intervention
That’s why we’re not just riding — we’re cycling toward change.
