For me, hockey has always been about more than just a game. It is about friendship, camaraderie, staying active and enjoying the opportunity to compete. At this stage of my life, I feel particularly fortunate to still be able to lace up my skates and get out on the ice.
That opportunity is something I don't take for granted. I've personally benefited from advances in medical research and treatment that have allowed me to manage health challenges and continue doing the things I love, including playing hockey. I know firsthand how much research, innovation and medical care can change someone's life. I'm grateful for that progress, and it has given me an even greater appreciation for the importance of supporting research in other areas of medicine.
My connection to Baycrest is also deeply personal. My stepfather is currently in Baycrest's care, living with advanced Alzheimer's disease. Watching someone close to our family experience the devastating effects of this illness has brought home just how profoundly Alzheimer's affects not only the individual, but also the people who love them.
It is difficult to watch a disease gradually take away memories, independence and the person that family and friends have known for years. It has also given me a much greater appreciation for the people who dedicate their lives to caring for those affected and for the researchers working toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
This is my first year participating in the Baycrest Pro-Am Hockey Tournament, and I'm proud to be part of an event that brings together a love of hockey with such an important cause.
I've been fortunate to benefit from medical research that has helped me keep doing what I love. I hope that, by participating and raising funds for Baycrest, I can help advance research that will make a similar difference in the lives of others and their families.
I'm playing for the hope that future generations won't have to experience Alzheimer's in the same way. And I'm playing with gratitude for the opportunity to still be on the ice.
Thank you for supporting me and the important work being done at Baycrest.
